23.02.99: Ericsson has launched a new water, dust and shock-resistant mobile phone.

Designed for use in tough environments, the R250 PRO is sealed with Gore-Tex membranes and rubber gaskets, and features a special locking device to ensure the phone stays intact should it be dropped.

Other features include speakerphone, data/fax capabilities, and a 'built-in vibrating alert', according to the company.

The model will be available in the third quarter of this year, in orange and green.

23.02.04: While the past five years of handset innovations may make this old news sound more outdated than even its half-decade would suggest, its timing is apt.

This is because it tees up nicely with our coverage from 3GSM in Cannes - one of the mobile industry's largest trade shows.

You can expect more revolutions in the mobile world during the coming week and you should hope some will be more exciting than simply covering a phone in a Tim Burton-esque Batman outfit and making it vibrate. This may have washed (and survived - thanks to its waterproofing) five years ago, but the mobile consumer is now far less easily wowed.

We'll keep you updated with all the news as it breaks in Cannes.
