Infineon, the German chipmaker once owned by Siemens, is talking to Ericsson about a possible purchase.

Infineon is understood to be interested in the Swedish firm's microelectronics division which makes components for mobile phones and fixed-line telephone networks.

The talks have been ongoing for several months, according to this morning's FT. Ericsson's mobile phone rivals Nokia and Siemens have long since concentrated on handset design and marketing buying in microchips from third parties. If the Infineon deal goes through, Ericsson will follow suit.
