Siemens has revealed it will license mobile phone technology from Motorola in order to offer 3G handsets this year.
Beyond this simple re-badging exercise, the German equipment maker said it will also use Motorola's i.300 platform to develop its own handsets for 2004.
Financial terms of the arrangement have not been disclosed but it is a major win for Motorola, the world's second largest handset producer.
The move is bound to lead to more speculation over possible consolidation in the nascent 3G handset market. Siemens previously partnered with Japan's Toshiba but, unlike the Sony Ericsson arrangement, that relationship recently dissolved.
