Slovakia has put three third-generation mobile telephone licences up for sale for the bargain-basement price of Sk1.5bn (£22m) each.
At the price Vodafone paid for its UK 3G licence, this sum would buy the right to cover a town the size of Swansea.
The price reflects the low sums paid for licences in other East European countries, and the likely difficulty of finding bidders.
Slovakia only has two GSM mobile phone operators, Globtel and Eurotel, despite government attempts to attract a third.
The two are both expected to bid, along with TIW of Canada and Telenor of Norway.
