One2One axes 900 staff

Compulsory redundancies to come...

One2One has made 900 people redundant in a sign of worrying times for the mobile phone industry.

The job losses, which account for 13 per cent of the company's workforce, will include voluntary and compulsory redundancies, but a spokeswoman was not able to confirm which parts of the business have been affected.

The mobile sector has seen a considerable slowdown over the past year, which has resulted in massive job losses at infrastructure providers, but until recently the networks were not so badly affected.

Last month, however, Vodafone confirmed that 650 positions would be lost at the company's UK operations.

Harris Jones, chief executive officer, at One2One, said: "Our business review has been all about preparing ourselves for the future, both as a major UK telecommunications player and as a key component within T-Mobile.

"This has meant taking a realistic look at our resources and where they can be best deployed to provide for future growth, as we lead the industry into a new era of mobile services."

One2One is owned by T-Mobile, the mobile arm of Deutsche Telekom.
