Red Hat is planning to bring open source to the masses through mobile devices in a deal with 3G LAB.
Both companies claim that the open source operating system they are jointly developing - called eCos/M3 - will enable network operators and device manufacturers to make next generation solutions more cheaply and quickly than proprietary software.
The open source platform is being developed for 2.5G and 3G mobile devices.
Steve Ives, CEO of 3G LAB, said eCos/M3 is a significant step towards providing the openness, flexibility and modularity which is vital in customising devices for users.
Red Hat is confident that the backing of the ever-enthusiastic and productive open source developer network will add value to the eCos/MS system.
