Mobile mast attacked by angry clan...

Police are looking for a 15-strong gang after an Orange-owned mobile phone mast was vandalised and a security guard was threatened with a weapon in Inverclyde over the weekend.

The sabotage, which caused damage that could cost Orange up to £25,000 to repair, follows local opposition to the mast's erection.

A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman confirmed the incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning. The security guard was not injured.

An Orange spokeswoman said the company is working with police and added the mast was "not operational" at the time of the attack.

The spokeswoman added that Orange has an obligation under its license to provide nationwide coverage but insisted it "closely considers its transmitter sites".

The spokeswoman said: "The transmitters work through line of sight so they are sometimes erected in prominent areas and we appreciate in some areas people may not appreciate looking out their window and seeing a mast."
