Switzerland calls off its 3G auction

The Swiss government has postponed its auction of next generation mobile phone licences after the initial number of bidders equaled the number of licences on offer.

The auction was arranged when the likely number of bidders for the four licenses was thought to be ten, but at the weekend the number of bidders fell from five to four as two consortia merged.

This is the latest setback for licence auctions in Europe following poor returns in Italy and the recent postponement of Poland's allocation process.
