The two companies will work to integrate their fixed-line and mobile services and to include AOL Instant Messaging on DoCoMo's iMode service.

Dr Keiji Tachikawa, CEO of NTT DoCoMo, said in a statement: "America Online is the ideal partner with which to pursue our shared vision of seamlessly integrated internet services - fixed mobile convergence - across both fixed-line and wireless services." The deal leaves AOL with a 40.3 per cent holding in AOL Japan, the remaining 17.4 per cent is owned by Mitsui and Nikkei.
