The joint venture, named EMMV, has been set up to build WAP mobile phones based on Microsoft's Windows 2000 and Microsoft Exchange software.

Ericsson and Microsoft also indicated they were working on Bluetooth technology to enable the wireless transmission of data using radio waves.

EMMV said it expects to have products on the market by the end of the year.

The venture is 70 per cent owned by Ericsson and 30 per cent by Microsoft.
