Intel and Cisco go on mobile comms spending spree

Intel has splashed out $300m on communications software and services specialist, Trillium Digital Systems.

Trillium's offerings are currently used in more than 500 projects by suppliers of wireless, internet, broadband and telephony products.

Tom Franz, vice president and general manager of Intel's Network Processing Group, said in a statement: "We expect Trillium, as an Intel subsidiary, to continue developing and supporting portable software solutions for the communications industry, while adding a new line of solutions that are optimized for the Intel Internet Exchange architecture."

Meanwhile, Cisco has agreed to buy wireless internet equipment outfit, IPmobile, for $425m.

The deal bolsters Cisco's wireless communications portfolio. IPmobile focuses on transforming radio capacity into managed, IP service-ready bandwidth.
