UK launches health probe into mobile computers

The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is to fund a 12 month investigation into ways in which mobile computing devices may harm users.

London-based ergonomics consultancy, System Concepts has been hired to conduct surveys, observe users, analyse organisational figures recording injuries and accidents, and compare the experiences of desktop and notebook PC users. A final report will be presented to the HSE next year.

In addition to examining the health implications of using mobile screens and small keyboards, System Concepts will look at other problem areas. These include the effects carrying heavy laptops, transformers and cabling, as well as stress caused by longer working hours, and the risk of personal attack due to carrying expensive equipment around.

System Concepts MD, Tom Stewart said more people are reporting problems with mobile devices, but said this could be due to their more widespread use.

Tanya Heasman, senior consultant at System Concepts, told Silicon.com: "Guidelines for the ways portables should be used aren't fully considered in existing HSE documentation. But it's an area that's becoming increasingly important."

At present, employers must comply with guidelines in the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992.
