Vodafone has followed the lead of numerous US high-tech companies by offering all its 6,000-plus employees share options worth at least half their basic salary.
The UK's largest mobile network operator claims the shares - dubbed the millennium share options because they will be exercisable from July 2001 - make the company the UK's largest to operate such a scheme.
Chris Gent, Vodafone's chief executive, said the share options are necessary to keep and develop expertise.
