UK police put handhelds on trial

The traditional police officer's notebook is being upgraded to a handheld computer in a trial due to start next month in Surrey, England.

Around 3,000 members of Surrey's police force will use mobile computer units to access information to help them solve crime and advise the public.

Sharp will supply the hand-held PCs, which will run on the Windows CE operating system.

A Surrey police spokeswoman said project leaders are still working through details of how the handhelds will be used. The project is due to start in August.
