Capita had signed a six-year, £22m extension to its contract with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA).

The contract, which was originally signed in 1997 for seven years, gave Capita responsibility for supporting the DSA's IT infrastructure. The extension will see the company managing the public sector agency's hardware and software and will also be charged with developing a system to handle registration of driving instructors.

During the previous life of the contract, Capita were responsible for devising and putting into place the driving test control system platform.

Gary Austin, chief executive of the DSA, noted test fees won't rise because of the £22m deal.
