Japanese games maker Sega announced a fall in sales of 18 per cent as it continues to feel the squeeze from fellow-console makers Sony, Nintendo and soon-to-market Microsoft.

Sega, which has now stopped making the Dreamcast console, announced losses of Y20.9bn (£119.4m) and sales of Y97.79bn (£559.7m) for the first half of the year. Last year the company recorded losses of Y32.5 (£186m).

Among the areas of the business to suffer was Ascii, the magazine group the company owns.
