Staff at the London Stock Exchange have been evacuated following a security alert, just as the FTSE fell 300 points to reach a new low.

The index exceeded its four year low by falling 6.11 per cent to 4,278.5, beating the last recorded low in November 1997.

Details of the security alert have not yet been released, but the City of London police force has been on its highest alert, following last week's US attacks.
