Notably, Vodafone suffered a fall of almost 3.5 per cent while Autonomy, the internet software company, is down 6.7 per cent.
Overnight, the Nasdaq also turned in a poor performance dropping seven per cent.
Germany's Neuer Markt 50 fell 1.3 per cent on its opening, following news that shares in ecommerce outfit Intershop plunged 70 per cent.
