Thus has signed an £11.3m five-year contract with educational network provider London Metropolitan Network (LMN).

The contract extension will see the majority of educational institutions connected using a 1Gbps Ethernet connection, with seven sites getting a 10Gbps Ethernet connection.

You what…?

Bust through tech jargon with silicon.com's Cheat Sheets.

LMN will use Thus' next generation network to support remote data storage, email filtering and access to the UK's Joint academic network - known as Janet.

If an institution needs extra bandwidth the Ethernet infrastructure - called LMN3 - can also increase its capacity to 80Gbps at short notice and without the need for downtime.

Phil Male, COO at Thus, said educational institutions need more and more bandwidth to provide students with the required capacity to support collaborative learning and large research projects. The company said the network is also scalable to meet the needs of the LMN in the future.

Thus, which owns ISP Demon, will provide the next-gen network to 137 higher and further education colleges across the Greater London area.
