The number of DSL subscribers has climbed to 100 million worldwide, with some countries reporting growth of over 500 per cent in one year.

Figures from analyst house Point Topic for the DSL Forum show the 100-million mark was broken for the first time last month, with countries new to the broadband technology showing biggest growth.

Cyprus saw a 725 per cent increase in DSL subscribers during 2004, while the Czech Republic notched up nearly 600 per cent growth.

In terms of sheer numbers, however, China was the star performer, adding 8.5 million new DSL subscribers, compared to the US' nearly four million. However, the US tends towards fat pipe connections made via cable.

The UK was one Europe's biggest growers - adding 2.8 million new subscribers but was beaten into second position by France, which added 3.25m.

The DSL Forum hopes to see 500 million subscribers to DSL by 2010.
