AOL and BSkyB have signed a deal under the terms of which the satellite broadcaster's six million UK subscribers can use email, instant messaging (IM) and content from the online giant via their TVs.
Despite the availability of news, weather and other information, the focus seems to be on instant messaging, which is growing in popularity and is a key area for AOL. The idea is that viewers will be able to IM each other, or even IM 'buddies' who are online via a PC or mobile, perhaps commenting on a particular programme they are watching.
Connectivity is via the BT phone line Sky Active users need. There is an initial 12p dial-up cost and then billing is at a local call rate.
Messages can be written using the remote control or with an infrared keypad. Sky's interactive Sky Active service already features shopping, gaming, sport and film information along with email and SMS messaging.
