Cisco forges VOIP alliance

Dutch cable network operator UPC and US network equipment provider Cisco Systems have entered into a joint venture to offer voice over internet protocol (VOIP) in an agreement covering Europe.

Networks are planned in at least five European towns. Financial details of the business alliance still have to be finalised by the two companies.

Analysts have speculated that part of the deal might involve Cisco investing in UPC, which has debts of E7bn (£4.47bn). The US company laughed this off as speculation.

For the user, the principal benefit of transmitting digitised speech signals over the internet, rather than over conventional telephone lines, is that all calls are charged at a local rate.
