By Sally Watson

Published: 20 December 1999 16:26 GMT

Networking giant Cisco is today expected to announce a $2.2m stock acquisition of Pirelli's optical systems business.

If it goes ahead, the acquisition would be Cisco's first move into dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) technology. Cisco would also invest $100m into Pirelli's optical components and submarine systems divisions.

The deal will be the networking company's largest European acquisition, and its fourth largest ever.
