Telecom Italia has signed a £32m deal with Marconi Communications for transmission equipment to improve the Italian trunk backbone for voice and data calls.
Speeds will go up from the current 2.5 Gbps to 25 Gbps on the national network, and may be increased to 100 Gbps between major cities. The network will be based on SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) and WDM (Wave Division Multiplexing) technologies.
