When it comes to IP telephony, RADVision is one of many companies fighting to create the definitive industry standard.
Originally formed for the video conferencing market, its H.323 technology has now been migrated for all IP-based communications.
The company's CEO and founder, Ami Amir, believes standards are vital if the IP telephony market is going to prosper. In an exclusive interview with Silicon.com, he explained why: "If you don't have a standard there will be a communication break down. But there is also a deeper need in that you can use it to build on the knowledge of other people. If I build a product to standard you don't need to invent it again, you can build on top of it."
The drive to create greater interoperability has made the standards market highly competitive, Amir argued, and as users no longer want to rely on a single vendor for their products, the battlefield has evolved away from simply marketshare.
Amir added: "The big fight today is between the people who want to see that the intelligence is in the network - the people who want to build homogeneous networks - and the people who want to build heterogeneous networks where the intelligence mostly lies at the end station."
Amir believes that the final solution will contain elements of both camps.
