Marconi Communications is to supply Ericsson with SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy) equipment worth £1.5bn.
The high-speed technology will be used by Ericsson customers around the world, particularly those building mobile backbone networks.
The agreement will last seven years, and is an extension of the firms' SDH cooperation agreement. Marconi claims to command 30 per cent of the global SDH product market, also known as Sonet (synchronous optical network) in the US.
