Cisco is to pay $435m in stock for StratumOne Communications, a privately held developer of integrated semiconductor technology.

The networking giant said the acquisition will enable it to supply service providers with the silicon for next-generation, high-speed networks carrying data, voice and video.

The two companies have worked together in the past, developing technology for public networks capable of transporting data at speeds of up to 10Gbps.
