Broadcom offers high-speed delivery down copper wires

Broadcom's latest chip claims to enable faster delivery of video, voice and data without the use of fibre optic cables.

For use in local network switches, the chip offers speeds of 1GB per second down traditional copper wires. With such networks confined to speeds of 100Mbps and the high cost of fibre optics, the chip manufacturer believes the release will offer companies the use of a whole range of applications.

Production is due to start in the third quarter and will see the chip used in switches, adapter cards and motherboards in servers and PCs.
