Siemens has acquired US Internet specialist, Redstone Communications in a bid to boost its position in the US voice and data network market.

Founded in autumn 1997, Massachusetts-based Redstone specialises in IP routing technology.

The deal is the latest in a series of acquisitions for Siemens' newly-formed Information and Communications segment, Unisphere. It has already spent over $500m since it formed at the beginning of the month, acquiring Argon Networks and Castle Networks and a stake in Accelerated Networks.

Siemens also announced that it will launch Siemens Smart Card Systems, a new legally-separate company to be run by Siemens Business Services.

Financial details of the Redstone acquisition have not been disclosed.
